Introduction: I am a PhD candidate at the Graduate School for International Development Studies, Department for Society and Globalisation, Roskilde University, Denmark. My PhD project is a study of the changes produced in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s (DRC) international relations as a result of the emergence of new development partners. My doctoral research concerns the impact of a rising China on the structure of the global political economy in world-historical context, with a particular focus on extractive industries in SSA and Latin America. I have also conducted research on the South African rare earth metals industry for the South African Institute of International Affairs and the Centre for Chinese Studies at Stellenbosch.
